[Unpad.ac.id, 7/08/2017] The involvement of Universitas Padjadjaran in the development of Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhandaratu becomes its own advantage when it is proposed as UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG). In addition to supporting research and scientific aspects, Unpad also makes the development of Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu become the flagship program of the university.
Head of Research Center of Geopark and Geological Disaster of Unpad, Prof. Ir. Mega Fatimah Rosana, M.Sc., PhD, said that UNESCO Assessors team that has conducted assessment in Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu 1-4 August ago appreciated the existence of Unpad building in Geopark area. Bumi Walagri Padjadjaran Building is currently used as the location of Geopark Research Center.
Therefore, besides visiting several geological, nature, culture, and community empowerment sites, the assessors team also visited the Puslit Geopark Unpad building. Puslit established since 2016 aims to be a center of study and references for the development of science, technology, and management of geological resources for harmonization of life at local, national and global levels.
“The special visit to Puslit Geopark Unpad in Surade is also an important geosite as a research center built by Unpad to support the development of other geoparks in Indonesia,” Prof. said. Mega.
During the visit to the puslit building, the Assessors team was very impressed with the existence of research center and research activities that have been done by Unpad. The research was conducted by lecturers and students from various fields of science that exist in Unpad.
Professor of Faculty of Geological Engineering Unpad also revealed, the assessor team also appreciate Unpad’s efforts in funding the research. Throughout 2017, Unpad has provided research fund of almost 2.2 Billion Rupiah for various research schemes.
“They are also very positive judging because some research Doctoral students especially from FTG do also research about Geopark, either in Ciletuh, or other geopark in Indonesia,” said Prof. Mega.
Research activities in this area have been done long Carsuh Prof. Mega since 13 years ago. The research focus in Ciletuh is divided into 3 studies, namely geodiversity, biodiversity, and cultural diversity. Currently, research in Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu area is guarded by three professors of Unpad, namely: Prof. Mega for geological research, Prof. Dr. Cece Sobarna, M. Hum., For research in the field of culture, and Prof. Dr. Erri N. Megantara for research in the field of biodiversity.
In accordance with the Rector’s commitment in encouraging the sustainability of research in Ciletuh, Prof. Mega said, Unpad appealed to the researchers to be able to take the role of conducting research and community service programs, KKNM-PPMD programs, and Professors Village Entrance program.
According to Prof. Mega, research in Ciletuh is not only done one scientific study, but emphasized on multidisciplinary science, including social aspect. Puslit Geopark itself will fully support research activities in Ciletuh.
“The existence of this Research Center is also closely related to other Unpad flagship programs such as Unpad-BUMN Center of Excellence, SDGs Center, Science and Technopark Area, and Development of Pangandaran Campus,” said Prof. Mega.*
